Back From Vacation

Hi Friends! I hope everyone is doing well. I am just getting back to my day job today after being on vacation for about a week to attend a Salute to Supernatural (the TV show) convention.

Yep. That pretty much sums up my thoughts about today. Although, I did spend a lot of Monday and Tuesday working at my “second” job – the one that is a lot more chill and forgiving – which is making Luvvies.

I had debated while I was away, whether or not I was going to bring my crochet; but, we already had so much that we were taking, I didn’t want to bring even more. Even though I only was away from my hooks for a few days, I found that I really missed having the hook and yarn in my hands – more than I thought I would.

I had such joy Monday afternoon when I was able to sit down and start creating again – although there was some worry that I would be rusty – even from the little time that I had been away.

I chose this sweet lil’ dinosaur as my first project to ease back into. She was quick to work up, and the bright colors and contrast of colors made her super fun to play with. As with most of my Luvvies, I had to wrestle her from my daughter (who wants one of everything that I make).

Because the dinosaur worked up quicker than I expected and turned out better than I expected for a new pattern, I felt encouraged to try something else a little new. I also wanted to try something a little summery.

I found an adorable pattern for a jellyfish and decided to make this lil’ jellybean. I decided to use a rainbow effect pattern because not only is it summer, but June is Pride Month, and I wanted to do something to reflect that, as well.

The pattern for the frilly border was more complicated than I originally imagined, and the little smile got a little crooked once the stuffing was added, but over all, I couldn’t be more happy with how this mischievous lil’ cutie turned out. Of course, all my Luvvies have their own personalities – those personalities may change when they reach their forever homes, but for me, ‘Bean is a full of spirit and mischief.

Case in point? Her jumping on my head and deciding to hang out for a bit. (Yes, I have far too much fun testing the Luvvies after they are created).

So, now that I am back from vacation, I am energized to work on new designs and patterns to see what works best for the Luvvies that I can share with you. The downside is I’m back to working two jobs, plus full-time Mom duty, so it’s back to burning the candle at both ends. Oh well, it’s worth it in the end to have such adorable lil’ friends to play with and help spread joy to others.

Hugs and love,

Elisha

Hello Cap – WIP

I mentioned in a previous blog that I was working on a new project that was completely original, which was a first for me. I am so pleased to share this with you now that she is finished.

When Fandoms Collide

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I am a major nerd. One of my favorite fandoms is Hello Kitty; another favorite is the Marvel universe. After I completed my first full-size Hello Kitty Luvvie for an order I had a crazy idea: What if I adapted her and made her into a Captain America Hello Kitty.

I was nervous to embark on this. If it worked, this could be super cute and something to build off for the convention in August. If it failed, it was going to be all the more painful because it was my original idea.

Hello Luvvie – WIP

I’ve said from the beginning that I consider this a journey of crochet – I learn from so many other great artists that I love to share what I’ve learned with others and I try to make no illusions of sharing my successes as well as my failures – both from the business side of things and the art side of things. I’m also usually my own worst critic – I am a perfectionist, and because of that I usually am not satisfied with anything. However, I am so excited to share with you my Hello Kitty Luvvie.

May Ami-Along – WIP

Because starting a business, filling new orders, marketing, and preparing to be a vendor at my first show – on top of working full-time and having a family isn’t enough on my plate, I decided in May that I wanted to participate in amigurumipatterns.net‘s monthly Ami-Along.

What the Ami-Along is, is for a small fee ($5 for recurring membership/$6 for one-time Ami-Along) you receive a pattern for the month – this month it was a little boy and girl giraffe named Lyly and Lip – and you work “alongside” other crocheters who are creating the same project.

(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with amigurumipatterns.net and receive no monetary compensation from them; I am just a member of the Ami-Along forum and wanted to share this unique experience).

There’s a forum to post pictures of the works-in-progress, a place to ask the designer questions about the pattern (or about life in general), and to post your finished project. At the end of the time frame (usually a month – the May Ami-Along ends June 3), pictures of the finished projects are sent to the group and everyone can vote on their favorites. The favorites have a chance to win different fun prizes. It’s a really cool little set up. Also, some of the interpretations that other crocheters come up with – the creativity – is just astounding to watch: It sometimes makes me feel a little inferior, but also gives me goals to strive toward.

I’ve been a member of the forum for about three months, but I’ve never actually done the project along with anyone, so this month I was determined to change that.

Above is what the pattern designer RNata provided as an example of the finished product (aren’t they so sweet?). I’m looking at this going, I’ve totally got this. I’m going to get started and I’m going to be one of the first ones done. Fast forward to May 28 with only a few days left in the process and I just finished it. Well it was the thought that counted.

One of the things I thought was interesting about the pattern from the start was most of my Luvvies start with a conventional magic ring – a method to work the pattern in the round and spiral round and round from that center point. This pattern didn’t  begin that way. It started with a foundation chain of stitches and then worked around both sides of that foundation chain to create the spiral effect. This was a new technique for me, but I found I really enjoyed it and felt it created a more interesting shape.

The other thing I liked about the pattern was that for the bulk of the body, it was one continual piece (through one leg – the other leg had to be done separately and attached). I have mentioned before that I am not so good at sewing and attaching the pieces after the fact, so a continuous head, body, and one leg was a lovely surprise.

The body of my lil’ giraffe worked up really quickly. I was making good progress, and then – for reasons known only to my ADD addled brain, I set the project aside and started working on something else. I mean, I had the majority of this done – I just had a few finishing touches, and yet, instead of finishing it, I moved on to other things.

With the Memorial Day weekend in front of me, I decided this was the perfect time to clean up some of my long standing works-in-progress, this project among them. So, I went back to the project and started making my final touches.

I mentioned in a previous blog how I’ve been experimenting with different fibers in the same project – this lil’ girl is a perfect example of that. The multi-colored pattern in her skirt is from a yarn from Darn Good Yarn (in their monthly subscription box for May). The white embellishments on her skirt and the pieces of her hair are Vanna’s Choice diamond glitter (I love sparkles and wanted her to be pretty). The horns and embroidery of her eyebrows and nostrils are Cloudborn fingerling yarn from Craftsy. The bulk of the body was done with Caron Simply Soft. There definitely was a lot of fiber mixing in this project, but overall I was very pleased with how she turned out.img_1073

She maybe didn’t turn out exactly as the pattern picture showed her – and she may not have been as creative of some of the other ami-along participants, but she is super squeezable and I am happy with her. It was a good learning and growing experience, too, to share the journey with other crocheters during the month and to learn that sometimes it is okay to color outside the lines – maybe that will be something I can take more to heart the next time around.

Who knows? Maybe for June, I’ll be able to focus more on the ami-along and get it done first. Hahaha, who am I kidding – it will be down to the wire again; but, dang, if I’m not looking forward to it.

Hugs and cuddles,

Elisha

Having a Ball

As I continue to get the business end of Lil’ Luvvies off the ground, I’ve been experimenting with a lot of new patterns, but what I’ve really been having fun with is playing with different types of yarn.

yarn.jpg

Of course there are so many pretty colors to play with. I’ve been playing with making my unicorn pattern in some different variations of color…I’m even thinking of doing her in an ombre yarn to have that beautiful color change throughout. Just the thought of the different possibilities makes me giddy – and makes my already hyper active ADD even more so.

But, it hasn’t been just colors I have been playing with…it’s yarn manufacture, thickness, material, texture. My daughter is on the autism spectrum and has sensory issues. When she was little, she refused to crawl because she didn’t like the feel of the carpet beneath her hands and knees. As I walk through Joann’s and Michael’s, I have a feeling some of those texture issues come from me. There are several yarns I will not work with because the texture is too rough. But, I have been trying to branch out from the standard worsted weight brands that I started out with. Some of my experiment yarns are listed below.

As a disclaimer, some of these do contain affiliate links. If you click on the link, you will have the option to buy the yarn from that particular vendor. There is no additional cost or obligation to you, but I do receive a small commission from the site. However, that does not impact my evaluation of the products – and I only recommend items that I have used and enjoy personally.

FEELS LIKE BUTTA

feels-like-butta-215-106.jpg

Lion Brand has some of my favorite yarns – their pound of love yarn is my go to every day brand – right along with the Caron One Pound. I had been reading that Lion Brand was coming out with a new yarn that had a soft texture to it, but I hadn’t been able to find it in my local craft stores. Finally, I decided to break one of my rules and buy it online before trying it at the store first.

When I first got the Feels Like Butta yarn, I didn’t know what to think. It is a different texture. I wasn’t sure I would like how it worked up for my Luvvies. However, the early results have been positive and this does make for some super cuddly amigurumi. It is a thinner weight yarn, so there has been a learning curve as I adapt my techniques. If I’ve making a comfy Luvvie – that has a blanket component – I’m still deciding if I want to use this yarn, soft as it is, and a smaller hook. If I want to use two strands worked together to give it more bulk, but that adds to my cost and I don’t want to pass that along to the customer. The other option would be to make the blankie portion in a light worsted weight yarn, and the amigurumi in the Butta. Still things to play with, but I am so happy with the early results.

The only negative is it comes in a limited amount of colors – it hits most of the primary colors, but for the expanded palate of purples and skin tones, there aren’t options available at this point. Hopefully, this will be a successful brand for the company and they will provide more colors (hint, hint).

CARON SIMPLY SOFT

H97COL0008.jpg

Far and away this has been my favorite find so far. The texture is smooth without being slippy. It works up well. It is a medium strand thickness so I’ve had success using larger and smaller hooks with it. I like that the ply is sturdy, my hook doesn’t pierce the strands easily, and I have a more professional finish to my projects.

Using the Simply Soft gives a huggable, yet not overly plushy feel to the Luvvies. I also love the huge array of colors that this comes in, which allows me to really expand my creativity and play with mix-and-match colors. My mother always joked that I liked to color with a box of 64 crayons, and playing with yarn is no different.

VANNA’S CHOICE

lionbrandvannaschoiceyarn_aiid2171469.jpg

I grew up watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune with my grandmother and always admired the beautiful gowns that Vanna White wore during the show. It strikes me as ironic that all these years later, I am watching Wheel of Fortune with my daughter and am crafting Luvvies using Vanna’s Choice yarn.

This yarn is slightly thicker than the Feels Like Butta and Simply Soft, and it gives the Luvvies a more plushy feel. This feels like a very luxurious yarn to work with and makes sturdy, huggable friends. Some of the downsides, it can be on the pricier side – especially for larger Luvvies (although Craftsy and Lion Brand direct often run sales); however, I do like the fact that this yarn is affiliated with St. Jude’s Hospital, so it’s kind of a wash in terms of price. The other downside is because it is a slightly bulkier yarn, it is better suited for the larger hook sizes – I find myself using this for the blankie portions of the comfy Luvvies to give the blanket more weight and texture, but using the Butta or Simply Soft for the character itself.

SPRIGHTLY

1491518564562-20170111_461630_hero_001_label.jpg

Sprightly is one of Craftsy’s exclusive brands of yarn. Much like the Vanna’s Choice it is a slightly bulkier weight yarn that is better suited for larger hook sizes and either larger Luvvies, or for the blankie portions of the comfy Luvvies. I have been really happy with this brand; however, because it doesn’t lend itself as well for the smaller projects, I haven’t had a chance to use it for much more than the blankies. I have several skeins begging for my attention and I am looking forward to playing with them more. What I do like about Sprightly is there is a large assortment of colors to play with – and we already have established I am a sucker for color.

BERNAT SATIN

1491519155630-20170111_46404_hero_022_label.jpg

The Bernat Satin and the Caron Simply Soft are very similar. I find myself leaning toward the Simply Soft only because there are so many different shades – Simply Soft has brights, Tweeds, ombre, etc. – the Satin has several shades, but is a more limited palate. The Satin also is (only slightly) thicker than the Simply Soft. However, the yarn has the same beautiful easy pull and clean finish to it. I do find that I like the “Camel” color of the Satin for Caucasian flesh tones, it seems to be the closest to a peach-y hue as I have been able to find without looking pink.

PLAY WITH ALL THE YARNS

I still have several skeins that I haven’t even really played with yet. I have some samples of Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca, some Paintbox DK, Craftsy’s Cloudborn, and a few others to try. There just are so many possibilities – it can be a little overwhelming, but such a fun discovery.

One of the things I have been experimenting with recently is mixing fibers in my Luvvies. One part might have the Feels Like Butta, another the Satin, and the finishing touches may be in the Simply Soft.

Having so many fun options really helps each Luvvie to have their own flair and personality. As I find different color and fiber combinations to play with, I look so forward to sharing with you. There are some really cool things coming to the store in the near future and I can’t wait to share them with you; I hope you love them as much as I do.

Hugs and cuddles,

Elisha
